A new 23,000ft2 discount foodstore will be built at Kingsway after planning permission was granted by Gloucester City Council.

Supermarket chain Lidl who will occupy the development, revealed last year that it wanted to open a new store in Kingsway, as part of its ongoing expansion in the UK.

Gloucestershire-based property developer Robert Hitchins Ltd will build the store and Lidl will lease back the completed development on a 25 year lease. Works are expected to start on site within a few months with a view to the new supermarket opening by the end of 2020.

The multi-million investment will see Robert Hitchins Ltd build a sustainable store for Lidl with 1,325m² sales area and plans to create up to 40 new jobs. The supermarket will include an instore bakery, customer toilets and dual packing facilities.

Lidl GB’s Regional Head of Property, Glen Stidever, commented: “Lidl and our development partners Robert Hitchins Ltd could not be more delighted to have received planning permission and look forward to getting started on construction. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for their continued support, and very much look forward to opening our doors and offering our great value products in the not too distant future.”

Robert Hitchins Senior Development Manager, Michael Plimmer, commented: “It’s fantastic news that we received planning consent for the discount foodstore. It is going to be a busy few months on site at Kingsway which will see us developing over 70,000ft2 of new retail and leisure space, which will provide much needed choice and additional facilities on the door step of local people.”

Lidl GB has experienced continued growth as consumers flock to the supermarket to discover its great value products – more than two thirds of which are sourced from British suppliers – ranging from quality fruit and vegetables to premium wines. The latest Kantar Worldpanel results highlight Lidl as the fastest growing supermarket in the UK with market share of 6.0%.

The new store on Newhaven Road will sit next to Avionics House, adding to Lidl’s portfolio of 760 stores across Britain, and forming part of its plans to open more than 50 stores a year.
